FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is the CCADT a non-profit organization?
Yes.  Founded in March 2011, the CCADT is a 501(c)3 public benefit charity.  It is also a 100% volunteer-based organization.  Tax ID# 45-1686477.

What is the purpose of the CCADT?
  • To assist emergency response agencies with animal evacuation and emergency animal sheltering for small and large companion animals, livestock, equine during natural or human-caused disasters.
  • To educate the public on disaster preparedness for pets via workshops and through community outreach events.
  • To collaborate with city/county emergency planners to develop animal evacuation and emergency sheltering plans within the seven counties of the Central Valley – Fresno, Madera, Kings, Tulare, Mariposa, Merced, and Kern.
  • To assist law enforcement agencies with animal cruelty and neglect cases by providing resources for field rescue and temporary animal sheltering; to provide educational information to children and adults on the humane treatment of animals; and to bring awareness of the link between animal abuse and human violence.

  What services does CCADT provide?
  • Animal evacuation and emergency animal sheltering
  • Educational workshops on topics relating to animals in disasters, neglect or cruelty cases
  • Community outreach:  distributing information on disaster preparedness for animals
  • Assistance with animal removal and temporary sheltering for animal cruelty and neglect cases

Why was the CCADT created?
Lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina (2005) and other recent disasters that pet owners may:
  • Be unwilling to evacuate without their pets
  • Re-enter an unsafe area to rescue their pets
  • Risk their life to save their pets
The CCADT recognizes the importance of the human-animal bond.  Helping to save animals during disasters may also save human lives!

What is the difference between the CCADT and Animal Control Services
Animal Control Agencies are funded by city and county governments. They provide services to the community that are mandated by state, county or city laws.  These services include enforcing leash laws, pick-up of stray animals, removal of animal carcasses, enforcement of rabies control, investigations of animal cruelty, etc.

The CCADT is a volunteer-based organization that provides animal evacuation and emergency animal sheltering during crisis situations.  We may assist with cruelty and neglect cases if requested by law enforcement agencies.  Also, CCADT is funded by donations and grants.

What counties does the CCADT deploy to?
We provide disaster response services to California’s Mutual-Aid Region V - Fresno, Madera, Kings, Tulare, Mariposa, Merced and Kern counties.

Does the CCADT deploy to other counties in CA?
If requested by emergency service agencies, the CCADT may provide mutual-aid only if volunteer and equipment resources are available; however, the CCADT’s priority is with the seven counties mentioned above.

Are Donations Tax Deductible?
Yes.  Donations are tax-deductible to the extent of federal and state laws.  Please consult your tax advisor as to your individual tax situation.

Is the CCADT affiliated with any other animal rescue organization?
No. The CCADT is an independent, 501(c) 3 public benefit charity.  We are not affiliated or “under the umbrella” of any national or local humane societies, animal control services, SPCA’s or other animal rescue organizations.

How does the CCADT deploy to disasters?
The CCADT NEVER self-deploys.  We deploy only upon request by the city/county Office of Emergency Services, animal control services, law enforcement agencies and/or Red Cross Central Valley.

Do you deploy to animal rescue requests from the public?
No.  The calls received from the public are primarily requests that Animal Control agencies are responsible for (i.e. pick up of stray, injured or deceased animals).  We will refer the caller to appropriate Animal Control Agency for assistance.

Does the CCADT respond to animal cruelty and neglect incidents?
We will deploy to assist only upon request by law enforcement and/or animal control services.  Animal cruelty and neglect cases are under the jurisdiction of law enforcement and animal control agencies.

Does the CCADT have a physical animal shelter?
No.  The CCADT provides temporary emergency animal sheltering for household pets, livestock and equine during a disaster or other crisis situation.
